Our top 5 things to do in Sligo- for FREE

Happy new year everyone. We started off our new year galavanting in the beautiful North West. Co Sligo is a favourite of ours and we wasted no time in searching out the best spots to visit that didn’t involve spending lots of money. Its January and lets be honest- we’re all broke! So here is our top 5 things to do in Sligo that don’t involve spending money.

  1. Climb to the top of Truskmore

Truskmore is around 30kms outside Sligo town and its situated in the beautiful Gleniff Horseshoe valley. This scenic valley is a beautiful place to visit in itself but the views from the trek up to Truskmore are just out of this world. There is a road all the way up to summit of Sligo’s highest point as there is a ESB mast at the top which makes it really easy to get to. An hour and a half will have you at the top where you can enjoy epic views of Sligo town, Knocknarea and Mullaghmore.

2. Visit Queen Maeve’s Grave at Knocknarea

Another hike to checkout some epic views. There are a few different ways to climb up to the top of Knocknarea. We parked at a car park at a carpark near Primrose Grange- around 4kms from Sligo town. Its a direct walk with a clear path all the way up to the Summit Cairn. The Cairn itself is said to be the burial place of Queen Maeve. Legend has it that she is buried standing up facing her enemies in Ulster. Once at the top you have views of Sligo Airport, Rosses Point and of course the beautiful Wild Atlantic Way.

3. Go surfer spotting in Strandhill

Strandhill is one of those places where you want to live but realise that you wouldn’t be able to handle the crowds during the summer. This absolute beauty of a seaside of a village is a must visit on any trip to Sligo. Visit one of the cafes for a coffee or a poke around the gift section in shells cafe. Or just chill out with a stroll on the beach and check out the amazing talent of the surfers in one of Irelands favourite surfing destinations. Gostrandhill.com have got some amazing itinerarys for some more inspiration.

4. Explore Mullaghmore

This peninsula is approx 25kms North of Sligo and has got so much going for it. A beautiful beach for long walks with views as far over as the Slieve League Cliffs in Donegal. A looped drive to take in Mullaghmore head and of course one of the most instagramable spots in Ireland. Classie Bawn Castle with Benbullben mountain in the background.

5. Benbulbin forest walk

We didn’t get the chance to do this particular walk when we were in Sligo but its defintely one for the bucket list and our next visit to the County. Its on your way back from Mullaghmore if you are heading back into Sligo. This is a flat walk through woodland but with some beautiful views of Benbulben also.

So there you have it- the best place to go for an active break away. The food scene in Sligo is amazing so after all of that walking you can be assured of plenty of places to refuel. So get out there, fill your lungs with fresh air, your eyes with our beautiful country and your soul with fantastic memories! Happy Galavanting everyone xxx
