The last ten months have been pretty horrendous. Not knowing when to plan to go for a break away, sick of home schooling, sick of just being at home! As a nation we love our sun holidays- hopping on a plane and getting a week of lying on the beach, sipping pre dinner cocktails on the terrace and eating out every night. It looks more and more likely that we won’t get those foreign holidays in this year. A lot of us view Ireland as a pretty expensive place to travel around for our summer holidays. We are starting to see some hotels and self catering providers hiking up their prices and “rip off Ireland” is a phrase appearing everywhere now.
Some of us may have managed to save quite a bit during the last ten months- but that doesn’t mean we aren’t looking for a good value holiday! And it certainly doesn’t mean we are willing to pay €1100 for a double room for a two night stay along the WAW (Yes I was actually given that price!).
So every week we are going to give you a round up of the best value breakaways that we have found. Some will be family breakaways, couples breakaways or breakaways for friends and family.
****All of the prices listed below are correct as of the 12th February. We will mention if we have stayed in the accommodation before but otherwise this is just a suggestion for you*****
Our search this week was from April the 30th to May 02nd. Two nights of the May bank holiday weekend so a lot of these destinations will more than likely be cheaper on other dates.

Situated along the Wild Atlantic Way, Miltown Malbay is a quaint little town famous for its traditional Irish music. If the pubs are open then you will find music 7 nights a week. A ten minute walk brings you to Spanish Point Beach (Blue Flag). Lahinch beach and the famous surf school is only a ten minute drive. There are a few dining options in Miltown Malbay. We have eaten previously in the Old Bakehouse Restaurant and the Bellbridge House hotel always serves amazing food at a good price.
2 adults for two nights €126- and you can bring the dog!
The Wonderly Wagon is for those couples who want to really get away from it all. Situated close to beautiful Fintown in Co Donegal, its the perfect escape for a weekend of walking with the dog and exploring this part of beautiful Donegal. Apart from just getting away a beautiful rural setting, Finntown also hosts a small railway. The only narrow gauge railway in Donegal, which takes visitors on a run along the length of the beautiful Lough Finn and back. For something nice to eat its a ten minute drive into Glenties for at least 5 different restaurants to choose from.
2 Adults for two nights €120
While we haven’t actually stayed in this Hotel in Limerick, we can highly recommend it as a city to explore and a great night out! Beautiful Mayo- one of our favourite Countys in Ireland to visit. Mulranny is known as the gateway to Achill Island and is situated with the Atlantic Ocean to the front and the Great Western Greenway to the back. McLoughlins of Mulranny was listed in the The Irish Independent Travel Guide in 4th position of 30 entries in a bucket list of places to visit in Ireland. “What seems like an ordinary roadside pub….opens up to the most magnificent views across Clew Bay from the back”. McLaughlins of Mulranny serves food in their bar and restaurant and there are also a few other options in Mulranny.
Bike hire is available just down the road for €25 per adult and €15 per child. Check out our blog post on Mulranny for some inspiration.
2 adults for 2 nights for €160.

We have to keep remembering all of the positives that holidaying at home brings us too. No airport car parking fees, no shoving all your liquids into mini 100ml bottles. No leaving the good hair dryer at home etc!
If you have any great value breaks that you want to share with us please send them to us here. We’d love to hear from you! Planning a trip away definitely lightens the mood during lockdown- until we can Galavant again, stay safe xx
