Waterford Winterval

So its officially nearly Christmas! Is it just me or does it seem to be coming earlier and earlier every year? Waterford city is a really pretty city at any time of the year. With its cobbled streets, lovely shops and plenty of cosy pubs and restaurants it really is one of my favourite places to visit. Last weekend myself and Ali headed south to take in the sights and sounds of Waterford Winterval- Waterfords Christmas festival.

We had planned on driving over from Cork for the day and heading back that evening but we got a pretty amazing deal with the Viking Hotel on the outskirts of the city so we decided to make a night of it. The hotel is situated on the outer ring road outside the city so we dropped the cars and got a taxi straight into town. The taxi was just €10 and he left us off just beside the big wheel on Merchants quay. Ali was adamant that she wasn’t getting on the wheel so I decided I was going up myself. I knew she wouldn’t let me go up on my own so as we were walking over she changed her mind! 🙂

The big wheel is just €5 for adults and there was a VIP option for €50. You could have a pretty plush carraige with two furry blankets and a bottle of prosecco. Believe me you would be glad of the furry blankets up there. The views were amazing though and well worth the cold. After our trip in the sky we headed back up the town to find the markets. We didn’t have far to go at all. Arundel square is just back up towards the shopping area and that’s where we found the first markets. There is a carousel for the kids just on the street across from here.

In Arundel square you will find food stalls and some lovely craft stalls too. Arundel square is situated just at the front of the square shopping centre,  so its quite easy find. Between here and Cathedral square you will find Santas Kingdom. Booking is essential for this and it looked absolutely magical. Kids are priced are €16.50 for this event.

We could hear the commotion coming from Cathedral square before we saw it. It was absolutely magical up here. They even had Churros! Yum! The entire surround of the square is full of lovely gift stalls and of course food stalls. There is a big Santa’s sleigh opposite the Churros stall so you and all the family can hop on for a photo. On the other side of the square is the light show or Waterford Illuminates! Every half an hour the light show illuminates this part of the square. It was packed on this particular evening with Adults and Kids alike. You really couldn’t help but start dancing along with the kids to all the tunes! We spent a good hour up here walking around all the stalls and soaking up the Christmas atmosphere. Accross the road from here you will find Winterval on ice at the Waterside Car Park. We didn’t venture over here as the both of us are absolutely useless at Ice Skating! This is open until the 14th January so its there over the Christmas holidays.

There are so many other attractions at winterval this year also- the horse drawn carriage, the winterval express train, the elves workshop and so much more. Myself and Ali headed to The Reg for a well needed drink to warm us up after all our walking around Waterford. This is a beautiful cosy pub right beside Reginalds tower and beside the river. We eventually headed back to the hotel for a lovely dinner in the Asgard Bar and a few more drinks! This really did work out as the perfect hotel to base ourselves in.

I have attached the link for the festival below to help you with your visit. I would also highly recommend the Viking Hotel for a stay when you are in Waterford also. Its always cheaper to book direct here and they will give you a free glass of wine too!! Put Waterford on your bucket list for the markets this year and as always- Happy Galavanting!! xxx
